What if I have zero sales experience?
You have sales experience. Throughout your life, you have been selling - whether it's other people or yourself. Selling means delivering on what you promise to do. Think about New Year's resolutions as an example. Some people swear to achieve a specific goal, and those who follow through succeed in making the sale to themselves. The following year, those same people will be confident to make that sale again. For those who didn't follow through, all hope is not lost. They need to find a goal important enough to take significant action towards. This is sales! Deep down, we all have an inner salesperson waiting to be unleashed. When it comes to getting a job in sales, you can take away the emotion and see yourself as a product. How will you benefit the place you want to work? When in doubt or a negative thinking space, go on Google Earth, zoom out, and think about all the businesses. There must be at least one that would be lucky to have you on their team. Believe in yourself and the skills you have to offer. You've got this!
What was your favorite part of working in property managment?
I loved working at struggling properties because it was such a challenge! Working as a team was awesome, and we always felt accomplished when we fought through adversity together. It was great that there were no limits to what we could do or learn, and I especially enjoyed coaching others to improve their skills. But, the best part was seeing the look on a customer's face when we went above and beyond for them. Like this one time, a single mom came to our event, which no other competitor offered, and she said, "That was the first time I saw my son smile in years!" I still remember it today, even though it happened ten years ago.
What do the recruiters look for?
It all comes down to the company you're applying to. Personally, when I'm recruiting, I'm always looking for what makes the candidate unique and where they can fit versus where they don't fit. I particularly enjoy working with those who have no prior experience, as they can apply what they learn with a fresh perspective. I've had success in the past hiring someone who had only worked in a restaurant, and they ended up winning the top sales award for the year and even received an all-expenses-paid trip for two. However, some companies may prioritize hiring candidates with specific hospitality experience, such as hotels. It really depends on the executive's preference - for instance, someone who previously sold shoes may be keen to bring in those with a similar background. While you can't change your past experience, you can always show a future employer that you have the right skills and mindset to fit in with their company culture.
Is the job hard?
The job may not be for you if you lack great support, have a negative mindset, or aren't interested in helping people. It's also not a good fit if you don't enjoy working in a team or a fast-paced environment and learning all aspects of business operations. While the job can be challenging, there are rewards for those who are up for the challenge. If you're looking for an easy job, there are locations that offer an easier workload, but everyone's different. For me, working at an easy property would be unsatisfying, but I know many people who are happy, making a good living, and enjoying their work-life balance. I was fortunate to have great mentors while learning the business, so it felt easy for me. That's why I'm passionate about providing people with the support they need to make the difficult aspects of the job seem easy, like a cheat code.
Do I get support if I'm stuck?
It all boils down to the company and your direct leadership. You could be at a large organization where reviews indicate no support, but if you have a natural leader who genuinely cares about your growth, it can be a game-changer. On the other hand, you may join a company with excellent reviews, only to find out soon enough that your leader could be more supportive and may even leave the organization. It's common in many businesses, but that's why I'm passionate about what I do. If you're NOT one of the lucky ones who finds themselves under outstanding leadership, mentorship, and coaching, then investing in yourself is wise. You'll never regret it!
